Green Ammonia

A practical pathway into green ammonia

Leaf Branch is PlugInSA's development initiative for renewable-powered green ammonia. We begin with locally relevant agricultural and industrial applications — starting with feasibility, technical partners and staged commercialisation — ahead of mobility and export value chains as the platform scales.

How Green Ammonia Is Made

An integrated train — electrolysis, synthesis, refrigeration and export handling — designed as one system rather than separate packages.

Stage 1

Renewable Hydrogen

Dedicated wind or solar supply feeds electrolysers sized to the ammonia loop, with buffer storage to smooth day-to-day variability.

Stage 2

Haber-Bosch Synthesis

Nitrogen from air separation meets green hydrogen over a catalyst to produce ammonia with a fraction of the emissions of fossil routes.

Stage 3

Storage & Export

Refrigeration, tankage and loading systems designed to existing ammonia handling standards and port safety requirements.

Where Green Ammonia Goes

Low-Carbon Fertiliser

Supports food production without the fossil gas emissions baked into conventional ammonia.

Marine Fuel

A drop-in, carbon-free fuel for deep-sea vessels already built to carry and burn ammonia.

Power & Co-Firing

Displaces coal in existing power stations and provides long-duration energy storage.

Hydrogen Carrier

Moves hydrogen across oceans in a form that uses today's ships, terminals and tanks.

Explore The Opportunity With Us

Through Leaf Branch, PlugInSA is exploring the potential for renewable-powered green hydrogen and green ammonia in South Africa, starting with practical agricultural and industrial applications. Share your site conditions, feedstock or offtake interest and we will discuss how feasibility work, technical expertise and potential partnerships could take it forward.
