A practical pathway into green hydrogen
Leaf Branch is PlugInSA's development initiative for renewable-powered green hydrogen. We start with locally relevant agricultural and industrial applications and grow through feasibility studies, technical partners and staged commercialisation — building toward operating assets rather than promising them up front.
We are approaching Leaf Branch as an opportunity-development process. Each step is intended to build evidence, reduce uncertainty and identify the right partners before larger commitments are made.
How Green Hydrogen Is Produced
Three electrolysis routes, selected for your site's power profile, water quality and load shape.
PEM Electrolysis
Fast-ramping proton exchange membranes that follow variable wind and solar output second by second, delivering high-purity hydrogen at pressure.
Alkaline Electrolysis
Robust, low-cost stacks for steady large-scale baseload hydrogen, where long operating life and simple maintenance matter most.
Solid Oxide (SOEC)
High-temperature electrolysis that uses industrial waste heat to cut electricity demand and lift overall system efficiency.
Where Green Hydrogen Is Used
Refining & Chemicals
Replaces grey hydrogen made from fossil gas in hydrotreating and ammonia feedstock.
Green Steel
Direct reduced iron fuelled by hydrogen instead of coking coal.
Heavy Transport
Fuel-cell fleets for trucks, buses and mining equipment on high-utilisation routes.
Export & Derivatives
Feedstock for green ammonia, green methanol and synthetic aviation fuel.
Explore The Opportunity With Us
Through Leaf Branch, PlugInSA is exploring the potential for renewable-powered green hydrogen and green ammonia in South Africa, starting with practical agricultural and industrial applications. Share your site conditions, feedstock or offtake interest and we will discuss how feasibility work, technical expertise and potential partnerships could take it forward.
